  • ISLAMABAD: Statements of account filed with the Election Commission by the country’s mainstream political parties – whose members spend millions of rupees on election campaigns – show they apparently lack the financial capacity to organise even a party convention. The statements of account filed by registered parties under Article 13 of the Political Parties Order 2002 for the last financial year – copies of which are available with Daily Times – show that several of the mainstream parties have an accumulated worth of less than Rs 1 million. A total of 56 registered political parties have submitted their assets and account statements, which have been certified by recognised chartered accountancy firms. (more...) #

  • HOBART: Pakistan’s drama-charged cricket Test series against Australia is ending in political blood-letting. Test great Javed Miandad has called for the heads of controversial brothers Kamran and Umar Akmal, saying they should be sacked immediately for ruining the image of Pakistan cricket. The former Test captain is also seeking a more hands-on role in the running of Pakistan cricket amid claims from former stars that coach Intikhab Alam has failed the squad during its shambolic tour of Australia. • ISLAMABAD: The government has cancelled a planned parliamentary delegation’s visit to India, National Assembly Speaker Fehmida Mirza told the house on Wednesday. She gave no reason for the cancellation about which she said she had been informed by the government. But the announcement came immediately after opposition leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan announced the withdrawal of a lawmaker of his PML-N party, Ayaz Amir, from the delegation to protest against what he called humiliation of Pakistani cricketers by their exclusion from the third edition of the Indian Premier League this year. • ISLAMABAD, Jan 20: The government hinted in the National Assembly on Wednesday it could file another review petition after studying the Supreme Court’s detailed ruling against the controversial Musharraf-era National Reconciliation Ordinance, but dismissed opposition fears of a clash with the superior judiciary. The first review petition on behalf of the government was filed on Saturday, challenging some portions of a short order made on Dec 16 last year by a 17-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry that nullified the NRO from the date of its enforcement on Oct 5, 2007, while the detailed judgment came on Tuesday. Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Babar Awan, responding to a speech by opposition leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, told the lower house “the government is examining this judgment” and had “up to 30 days” to file a review petition. He did not say if it would be done, but in what appeared to be strong indication of the government’s desire to use the option, said “an aggrieved party can go court for a review under the Constitution’s article 188” which empowers the Supreme Court to “review any judgment pronounced or any order made by it”. • ISLAMABAD: The Musharraf government prepared a money laundering reference against PML-N leaders Mian Nawaz Sharif and Mian Shahbaz Sharif in 2000 on the basis of a statement recorded by one of their trusted lieutenants, Senator Ishaq Dar, according to a court document seen by Dawn here on Thursday. Senator Dar’s handwritten statement, given before a magistrate back on April 25, 2000, had alleged that Sharif brothers used the Hudaibya Paper Mills as cover for money laundering during the late 1990s. The reference was prepared on the orders of then president Pervez Musharraf, but it was shelved after the Sharif brothers went into exile in December of the same year. The Musharraf government tried to reopen the reference in 2007 after Nawaz Sharif announced his return to the country. (more...) #
